Have you ever wanted to know what a hip-hop legend’s lyrics really meant?  A sociology of hip hop course at Georgetown University decodes Jay-Z‘s rhymes to learn about race, gender and economic inequality.   Professor and author Michael Eric Dyson teaches the course at Georgetown University and is sometimes criticized for his controversial views on social inequality.  The course is not your everyday listening party.  There are readings, midterms, and a final exam. The lectures focus on the come up of an impoverished man from the projects who became a hip hop icon and business mogul.  Although Sean “Jay-Z” Carter is the perfect example of “rags to riches.”
